Birdlight: International Best Seller

BIRDLIGHT Freeing Your Authentic Creativity

My heartfelt thanks to all who have supported the highly successful launch of Birdlight: Freeing Your Authentic Creativity!

On Tuesday, the book reached #1 in three categories on Amazon.ca, and it hit the Best Seller List in the U.S., making it an International Best Seller within hours of its launch. By Wednesday morning, Birdlight had broken the top 50 of all books (in all categories) sold on Kindle in Canada, at #35.

I share this news in gratitude for the beautiful communities this work has led me to! I could not have done this without you.

This book came to me in an hour of darkness. It came as a series of thoughts giving way to light, a series of birds, a gift, not just for me, but for others like me navigating obstacles in the creative process.

We are, every one of us, powerful creators, and each day we have an opportunity to create by design. This book frees you to do just that.

One of my great joys in bringing Birdlight into form has been engaging with other creative souls who have each brought their own artistry and unique gifts to the work. Once a book is in print, there is no such thing as a “solo artist” behind it. This was a team effort.

To community and artistry, and to singing the song you came to sing.

Blessings,

robin-blackburn-mcbride

P.S. On my website you’ll find my new Birdlight Book page which tells you more about the book. There you’ll also find my FREE gift to you – an audio visualization excerpt from the forthcoming Birdlight audio book which will be released shortly after the paperback in 2016. New Vision

039

Two weeks ago, on a chilly spring drive from Toronto to Ottawa, I made the familiar journey out along Highway 7: last year’s high brown grasses still swaying, bare trees tight with their shy buds, and the sky a-swirl with birds. Countless crows and brown birds flapped in the blue, while above them raptors soared on whatever thermals they could find. In the past when I’d studied those larger creatures as they’d ascended into specks, they’d seemed like eagles to me.

Now I know better.

When I arrived at a Gatineau motel at dusk, raptors still glided effortlessly through my mind. I recalled a scene years ago in New Mexico, sitting out at the edge of the Taos Pueblo lands where I’d been enchanted by that same  particular species of high-flier. At the time I’d recognized them by sight, and not by name.

I had gathered up their feathers, briefly mislabelling them as “hawk”. On a twilight walk I’d discovered a whole flock perched silently in a towering birch tree. The eerie shock of beholding twenty pairs of massive shoulders, folded wings, and staring eyes, had left me wondering.

The world delivers messages to us all the time. This was one of those times when I did my best to receive.

I wonder if it’s been like that for you.

Are you looking to the world for messages?

Do you long for greater fulfillment?

Do you seek to rise above the old downward pull of the mundane, and soar to new places and beautiful experiences? Do you long for something more because… time’s passing?

That’s exactly how I felt when I collected those feathers in Taos.

In truth, so many wonders were about to occur in my life. Deep down, my intuition knew it – but the rest of me had NO idea of the scope of what lay ahead.

A jump for joy would have been in order; yet I was too confused at the time to celebrate. And I was scared.

Later, a friend identified my mysterious findings. She could tell the feathers by their silver undersides: “Vulture,” she said. “Birds of transformation.” And then she added brightly, “They pick the bones clean.”

There was my message.

It would take years to fully process the significance.

My encounter in Taos was both unsettling and charged with Life. I felt strangely elated. The vulture sightings led me to learn more deeply about the significance of that particular species of bird, as I am inclined to read augurs creatively when nature speaks. Undoubtedly, it’s why I’ve written a whole book on the connection between birds and heeding one’s true calling – it’s a book to help guide you in answering your call to create from your clear sense of mission, passion, and joy. Birdlight: Freeing Your Authentic Creativity launches later this month, on Tuesday, May 31st.

What I learned about the vulture years ago, is how it’s often misinterpreted as a foreboding animal. People associate it too narrowly and literally with death, when the animal is really a harbinger of the rebirth and renewal that accompany releasing one state of being for another. It symbolizes purification, and suggests both expansion and growth.

The vulture symbolizes New Vision.

One of the things that came to me as I embraced transformation in my own life was the discovery of a clear, deep calling to help others do the same. I couldn’t have made the changes I made without receiving the help of powerful coaches and guides along the way.

A Life Coach in Transformation, I now have years of study, training with the best in the field, and experience in supporting people just like you transform and say YES to becoming who they truly long to be. It was from this new and higher place that Birdlight came to me: a book in seven birds. For you.

Curiously, the vulture is not among them.

I’ll simply have to write a sequel.

To Your Vision!

Is Your Dream Right for You?

“How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.”

– Annie Dillard

Our dreams require us to invest our most valuable currency: our time. Unlike money, which flows out and back routinely in our lives, time never returns to us. Once spent, it’s gone.

To spend time well, we must be clear about our purpose.

You and I must ensure that whatever dream we’re building aligns with who we truly feel called to be, and how we authentically feel called to contribute.

At the outset of dream-building, people often ask, “Am I worthy of my dream?” I offer you this instead: “Is my dream worthy of me?” If your dream is right for you, it will be worthy of your time here in this precious and unrepeatable life.

Even a long life is brief; how each one of us invests our minutes, hours, and days is paramount to our fulfillment.

As I enter the final stages of bringing a book into the world, I find myself returning to a core sense of purpose. When things are busy and new challenges arise, I remind myself of all the ways my own dream aligns with my inner Why. When that alignment occurs, I am willing to do what it takes to bring it into form. Do I do it perfectly? No. The point is not perfection; it’s focused action. It’s growth and expansion. It’s contribution. It’s that simple.

But it’s not always easy.

As much as we may love our Vision, we must also learn to be skillful in executing the steps to manifest it. Working with a coach not only helps, but accelerates that process.

My mentor once told me there’s no such thing as managing time. We must manage activities.

We don’t have to prosper in one area of life at the expense of all the others. We can commit to a dream and still be committed to living in harmony. Our health, relationships, time and money freedom, and career are all vital parts of a harmonious whole.

In that spirit, I offer you one of my favorite episodes of Marie Forleo’s Marie TV. Here she unpacks the “big rocks” metaphor beautifully to explain how to plan and schedule effectively. As my coaching clients know, calendarizing is an important key to making dreams into realities. I love helping people make desired changes and see measurable results through focused planning and action.

I also offer you a Business Insider article by psychologist Suzanne Gelb on strategies highly successful achievers use for maximizing efforts without sacrificing what’s most important.

And finally…

From my coaching home base, The Life Mastery Institute, here are five questions that will help you determine whether or not your dream is right for you. Use this list at the beginning of any new venture to ensure you’re on the right path; then, when challenges arrive, you’ll be willing to do what it takes to persist. The answer to each question must be a “Yes” for your dream to pass.

5-Point Test for Your Dream

  1. Do you feel passion for your dream? When you’ve chosen the right dream you will feel emotionally connected to your dream.  Thinking about your dream will give you an expanded sense of aliveness.
  1. Does the dream align with your core values? Your dream must align with your core values in order for it to manifest.  If your dream is in conflict with your values, you will find yourself blocked when it comes to bringing it into form. Part of you will resist.
  1. Does your dream cause you to grow?
  1. Do you need help from a Higher Power? Define that term any way you like. If you know all the steps to bring your dream to fruition, it’s not a big enough dream. Dreams are the Universe’s way of helping us grow and expand ourselves.
  1. Is there good in your dream for others? The Universe is always seeking expansion, and a dream that is aligned with your true self will always include some good for others.

Your mind may play host to a myriad of wishes, but you need to distinguish your deepest desire from whims and passing fancies.

You are endowed with the power to choose the dream that is closest to your heart, and by co-creating with Life itself, you can embark on a path that will manifest that dream.

To Your Highest Life,

robin-blackburn-mcbride

Creating Space for New Arrivals

lamb close crop 2_MG_6280

It’s February here in the Northern Hemisphere, and as the mid-winter days grow longer, we are beginning to hear the harbingers of spring…

Birdsong. Reports of groundhogs seeing their shadows – or not. If you visit or live in the countryside, you may even hear the bleating of newborn lambs. On the ancient Pagan calendar, lambing season corresponds with Imbolc celebrations in Ireland, marking early spring’s arrival. In that particular Old Country, one may pay homage to Brigid, Celtic Goddess of the Hearth, or to the Christian Saint Brigid; or one may simply pay tribute to the spirit of home fires and new life.

Regardless of your traditions, nationality, or the home in which you live, know this:

Even in these cold, grey days of February, this is the season of the sun’s returning. Right here, right now, it’s time to invite new beginnings.

It’s the perfect time to clean house!

Here are THREE home transformation processes for igniting your passion and inviting the next and greater version of Your Life:

1. IN YOUR HOME, RELEASE ITEMS THAT NO LONGER SERVE YOU. In her classic book, Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui, UK author Karen Kingston defines clutter very simply as:

  • Things you do not use or love
  • Things that are untidy and disorganized
  • Too many things in too small a space
  • Anything unfinished

I love the last point, and it’s easy to miss. To what extent are you weighed down by unfinished business? Winter is a great time to take inventory. “Things not dealt with in your home reflect issues not dealt with in your life, and they are a constant drain on your energy,” writes Kingston. Identify anything that currently drains you, and trade it for that which gives you joy and value.

Once upon a time, did you eagerly begin any projects, only to leave them incomplete? Are you living with physical evidence of old, unrealized hopes and dreams? And yes, that includes things packed away in closets, drawers, and cupboards.

In the Transformational Life Coaching work I do, my clients and I use the expression, “Hold your dream with an open palm. Ask for this, or something greater still.” Sometimes, we’re meant to follow one dream simply to be taken to a higher place where we can see still more possibilities.

Welcome a fresh, new FLOW of creative energy by identifying evidence of unfinished business in your home and life, and make a decision to do one of two things:

A. Commit to completing the project. Make a plan, set goals, and make a heartfelt pledge to follow through on your calendar and in your actions. Set due dates for each phase of project completion. Find an accountability partner to ensure you stay on target. If you’d love to accelerate your process with professional coaching support, contact me to inquire.

OR

B. Lovingly release the project. Recognize that in the past, on some level, working on it served you. Take time to reflect on how you grew through the process, and any other gifts it brought your way. Trust that in releasing something which no longer serves, you are actually making space for something new, expansive, and wonderful to enter your life.

Ask the question, “What would I Love?” Let go of all that’s not coherent with your answer.

2. CREATE A CLEAR AND SPECIFIC VISION OF WHAT YOU WOULD LOVE. In her book, The Life-changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing, author Marie Kondo advises the following: “Before you start, visualize your destination.” She urges, “What do you hope to gain through tidying?”

Kondo’s instructions are specific, and her approach to decluttering is fresh and very popular. I  personally have found her decluttering processes powerful.

Kondo encourages the creative seeker to “visualize the ideal lifestyle you dream of. If you skip this step, not only will it delay the whole process, but it will also put you at higher risk for rebound…” This founder of the KonMari Method emphasizes, “Think in concrete terms so that you can vividly picture what it would be like to live in a clutter-free space.”

If you are someone who finds releasing old objects from the past difficult, or if you’re confused and don’t know where to start, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up may be the perfect book for you.

3. SET YOUR INTENTIONS AS YOU RE-SET THE OBJECTS IN YOUR SPACE. Assign symbolic meaning to items you love, and place them purposefully around your home. A highly inspirational practitioner and writer on this topic is Denise Linn. Many years ago, reading her book, Sacred Space: Clearing and Enhancing the Energy of Your Home, changed my life. If you understand the adage, “Energy flows where attention goes,” you will appreciate Denise Linn and her many gifts. She incorporates Native American traditions (including those of her Cherokee ancestors) with space clearing and organizing practices from various cultures around the globe. I also recommend Linn’s book, Feng Shui for the Soul.

Finally …

My husband Hugh took the picture of the lamb on this post, a detail once carefully set into a Toronto apartment block.

For the soul.

The Freedom of Space: Part 1

Oaxaca March 2010 105

Happy New Year!

As I reflect on last year’s many gifts and lessons, and gaze into the vastness of our next tour around the sun, what stays with me is this: dream building is sacred work.

Deep-seated dreams are not gratuitous. They’re not “fluff” – the stuff of insubstantial wishing. They’re not born of greed, or shallowness, or self-centeredness.

Our deeper dreams come from Spirit.

Dream building is about aligning with one’s purpose, with the Soul.

The question, “What would you love?” is really this: What is Love seeking to manifest through You?

So easily, the self-protective ego can doubt the answer – and the question itself. In our culture, it’s easy to laugh them both off.

We forget that the Higher Self doesn’t beg such a reaction. On the contrary.

We need only listen, feel, and see into our Dream – into Love particularized uniquely in each of us, living fully and on purpose.

So what would You Love?

Answering may require courage. It may also bring tremendous relief. And joy!

As you step into the New Year, here are some strategies I find useful for opening into a clearer, brighter, more spacious state for dream building.

1. Begin by already being the person you dream of being.

Most of us were conditioned growing up that in order to “be someone,” we must first have something. (That is to say, we must first have the time, the pedigree, the graduate degree, the life partner, the money, the house, the car, the approval of others, etc.) Only then, the reasoning goes, are we in a position to do something “great” (fill in the blank).

One of the most powerful of the dream-building principles I have learned is this. When we change the order of “have, do, be,” to “be, do, have,” we begin to unlock our true potential.

Begin by being the person you wish to be right now. Imagine the feeling of having accomplished your dream, and let that feeling fill you. Feel that you are enough – that you are loved and Love itself, and you are whole.

In a calm, confident state of feeling fulfilled, take action for your dream. Trust that as you do, what you have will be increased. Better yet, you will grow in the process. As my teacher Mary Morrissey says, “Dreams are not meant for getting. They’re meant for growing.”

Who you become in the process of dream-building is the greatest gift of all.

2. Set a course for expansion, not contraction.

Be who you are called to be. Set your state by seeking experiences that feel most expansive and free-making. What activities and practices expand you? What thoughts help you to feel most alive? What people and places bring out the best in you?

Learn to notice when you are in a contractive state, and interrupt it by choosing to be expansive.

Transformational author Barbara DeAngelis sums this up beautifully in her book, Soul Shifts: “Choices for expansion are always soul choices. They create space for the Highest in you to emerge. They have expansive consequences, not only for you, but for everyone around you. When you expand you are a gift to the world.”

3. Create the space you desire (and require) to live your Dream.

Two essentials:

a) Make “calendarize” a verb to live by. Create space in your day, week, month, and year, by prioritizing and scheduling time to serve your Dream. This can be as basic as scheduling daily meditation, journaling, and “gratitude time” to raise your state. It can also be as elaborate as creating 90-day plans with actionable goals, events, and desired experiences.

b) Create space in your home and office by releasing what no longer serves, and setting the intention to call in what you desire. Freedom, in part, means being open to the guidance required to accelerate growth. It’s difficult to be open in an atmosphere of clutter. Clearing space physically and energetically invites a greater state of flow. Look for more on this in my next blog post.

If you are eager to begin, start by clearing away the holiday decor and (note to self) tidying up! As you do, take stock of all your many reasons to be grateful. Dare to vision!

For guidance on the visioning process, you may wish to revisit older blog posts here at Creative Calls.

Honour Your Discontent

This week’s post comes, in part, from the Life Mastery Institute. I share it with you in recognition that when we acknowledge and trust the voice of inner knowing, we’re on our way to finding our right direction.

In my workshops, people often are relieved to reframe their experience of longing and discontent. Instead of fearing and resisting those feelings, they learn to listen to, and act upon, their own Inner Guidance.

Consider the domains of full-spectrum wealth: Health, Relationships, Time and Money Freedom, and Vocation. Creativity runs through all of them. In which area of your life do you long for a different experience right now? In which domain do you feel unrest and struggle?

Now employ the Law of Opposites.

When you clearly identify the area where you feel stuck, imagine the opposite condition. What situation would free you? See it. Fully sense it. Emotionalize it.

Create a Vision of what you would love.

In this way, your longing becomes your treasure map, and the real Treasure is within You.

Here is the Life Mastery Institute post:

We don’t always know what our life’s purpose or journey is supposed to be, or we may have so many dreams we are overwhelmed with them all.  However, one thing is for sure: if we are feeling restless or discontent we are not living our dreams!  Feelings of discontent and longings for something else, even when we don’t know for sure toward what we are being drawn, are actually calls to pursue our greater good.  We discover true desire by first noticing discontent.

When you experience discontent or feel restless and you’re not sure why, don’t shut it out just because you don’t know what it means.  When you shut off your yearnings you become numb and paralyzed to create something more interesting.  Bring those inner rumblings to the front of your mind for examination.  These rumblings are nudging you toward a more meaningful existence and urging you not to settle for mediocrity.  By opening yourself up to them for examination you are allowing your discontent to lead you toward your purpose.

We also need to be aware of messages from those around us and not let others criticize us into shutting down our dreams, or even our discontent.  Restlessness is our Higher Self speaking to us, telling us there is more out there and we are not here to lead limited, cramped lives.  Allow that voice to be louder and ring truer than anyone else’s.  We are not here to settle for less than our purpose, nor should we settle for what anyone else limits us to.  Each and every one of us has infinite potential for creating whatever it is we want to create.

Dreams and desires pull at us, tug at us, speak to us, and will not leave us alone because we are not meant to live cramped lives.  Let these inner frictions rub until they create the spark that will ignite the fire of your own purpose.  You will know when your desire is sincere when just talking about it gives you energy and incites motivation in you, even when fruition is far off.  Harness your positive energy to partake in the plan that is in store for you.  In doing so, you will be honouring your discontent and letting it lead you to your greater good.

To Your Best Life,

robin-blackburn-mcbride
